I was born in New York on April 4, 1965 my father's name was Robert Downey. Film debut took place at the age of five years with a role in the film of his father, "Corral" (1970). He left school at age 17 to pursue a career as a serious actor. I was lucky I did not immediately, at first it was forced to earn money by the seller, then the waiter. Only a few years later I was able to enter into the composition, speaking at the club "area", an improvised theater troupe.
Since 1972, appearing regularly in films and episodic roles, but to attract the attention I was able only in 1984, a role in the film "Firstborn" (1984). Once played roles in "Oh, this science!" (1985) and "Back to School" (1986), and then worked briefly in the TV show "Saturday Night Live" (Season 86-86 years). In 1987 he returned to a great movie with a role in the crime drama "Less Than Zero" (1987). This was followed by roles in "Rent Lips" (1988), "Chances are" (1989), "foam" (1991), "A short montage" (1993), "Only You" (1994) and others. Best of my work during this period was the role of the legendary comic actor in the eponymous film by Richard Attenborough , "Chaplin" (1992) for this role, I almost got "Oscar" in 1993.
After rolling out in "Chaplin," all in one voice I predicted a bright future. In fact, it turned out somewhat differently, a magnificent start was ruined by alcohol. This time I got off easy fright - was released on bail and sent to a course of psychotherapy. During the filming of the picture "Love Triangle" (1997) daily blood tests for drugs. In 1997, for breach of bail, was sentenced to six months in prison. Released in 1998, but for a long time I did not have in 1999, came to the clinic for treatment of drug addiction, then in prison, then to the treatment center for alcoholism.
Hope for a full recovery appeared in 2000, I even managed to play several small roles, and to receive an invitation to film in the popular television series "Ally McBeal." All messed up another arrest. Produced by "Ally McBeal" terminated the contract, and the next two years I was in every sense - completely away from the scene.
During the long two years I struggled with drugs and alcohol, and finally came out of this battle victorious. In 2002, the second I got back to normal life, and since early 2003 and started getting a really important role in the films "The Singing Detective" (2003), "Gothic" (2003), "Zodiac" (2007), "Tropic Thunder" (2008) and, of course, in the film "Iron Man" (2008), which gathered at the box office more than half a billion dollars.
