Seminar on semantic networks by Jana Diesner

On May 20 the Laboratory for Internet Studies will host the seminar on semantic networks with Jana Diesner. Jana Diesner is an Assistant Professor at the iSchool (a.k.a. Graduate School of Library and Information Science) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She earned her PhD (thesis) at Carnegie Mellon University, School of Computer Science, where she worked at CASOS with Kethleen Carley. Jana conducts research at the nexus of network science, natural language processing and machine learning. Her research mission is to contribute to the computational analysis and better understanding of the interplay and co-evolution of information and the structure and functioning of socio-technical networks. In working towards this goal, she develops, adapts and analyzes methods and technologies for extracting information about networks from text corpora and considering the content of information for network analysis. In her empirical work, she studies networks from the business, science and geopolitical domain. She is particularly interested in covert information and covert networks.
